The Room With A View

Our Sunroom TWENTYSEVEN

A real broadside.

Yesterday - May 10, 2007...front page of Business Section.

Our Nice Guys Corp. dropped by the BBB.

"Company advised that delays are out of their control because of the State's permitting proceess."

Remember, this site is satire. Tradesmen, as mentioned below includes those employed who should know the requirements of local Codes...not only carpenters, etc. Emailed Nice Guys this:

Subject: DON'T LET IT SLIDE

Hi,
This isn't right!
You should stand up to this kind of critisism, and tell it like it is. Tell them the difficulties today in finding qualified help...how it is that no one today wants to work in the trades. Everyone wants to be in Marketing; Entertainment; Sports; or just plain on the dole, and hanging out in bars; sports events; theme parks; in front of TVs; hunting; or fishing.

Tell them gone are the industries like shipyards, foundries, and the like where tradesmen were developed through apprenticeship. Where spillover from these large industries supplied the small operators like yourself with top notch tradesmen.

Tell them that the serious Vocational High School that graduated professional tradesmen are a thing of the past. Tell them today the push is on for such things as Marketing; and Performing Arts...fantasy jobs. Tell them there aren't any real hands-on jobs for the younger generation, just Service Industry jobs like with Disney; or Burger King.

Fine young people bowing and scraping for tips like in some Banana Republic.

People just don't know...the average person just doesn't know that there aren't any more tradesmen out there. The few there are are spread so thin a small business has to go begging for qualified help...and patience on the part of their customers.

You try to serve them with nice products, but you're shot down every time another large industry goes foreign. Tell them...don't let them go away thinking it's your fault.

The above clipping in the email graphic says:

"A ( Names town ) contractor that specializes in sunrooms, roofing and storm-resistant home construction has been suspended from the local Better Business Bureau for not responding to customer complaints.
Nice Guys Corp, whose president is ( Names Name ), has racked up 52 complaints in the last 12 months, according to records kept by the Better Business Bureau of ( Names State ).
"Consumer complaints are regarding failure of the company to abide by their contracts and the delays in starting construction of their projects," says a BBB online report. "Company advised that delays are out of their control because of the permitting process in South ( Names State ). Most consumer complaints request a refund. In some cases the company has agreed to a refund but consumer advise they have not received payment."
Officers at Nice Guys initially did not return phone calls from reporter ( Names Reporter ). Today, they agreed to answer questions on Friday, and we will follow-up with more.
One dissatisfied customer is ( Names Name ), 78, of ( Names Town ) who signed a contract with the company in October and paid a $12,500 deposit to convert a screened porch to a sunroom. Six months later the work hasn't been completed.
"Nobody returns phone calls," ( Names name ) said. "All together I've had over 40 phone calls that weren't returned. I would like to have this done, but evidently these aren't the people to do it."
Nice Guy's website says: "Our reputation has been built upon providing quality work and service with integrity. Our employees are dedicated to the highest quality of customer service - professionally presented with individual pride and company spirit."

Here's one comment from literally dozens in the Newspaper's Blog:

"My 11-month old daughter was still in her mother's womb when we gave Nice Guys a $21000 down-payment. They ran an ad that claimed "Your Sunroom completed in days!" They have bragged about getting $12 million in sales from that ad. But they now claim cash-flow problems where they can't even afford the $500 permit fee for my sunroom. Where did our money go? I've paid over $1000 interest on the $21000 I gave them. I demolished my existing aluminum screen room back in June 2006 in anticipation of having a new sunroom. We've post-poned so many events in our life including our own marriage and our daughter's Christening, in hopes of having a completed sunroom to use for the event. Also, all of our exterior re-modeling has been on hold until we have the new sunroom addition. We have nothing but an ugly scar where our previous screen room was, and $21000 debt."

Sound familiar? I just read all this today! How about this:

Signed a contract last fall. According to the permits sitting on my deconstructed patio, they were granted mid-January. Within a couple of days a stack of lumber was dropped off. MONTHS later all they've done is tear down the old screens (for which they sent out a crew TWICE to do...the second crew was baffled that were sent to demo something that wasn't there!) and rip up the yard.
Then the inspector puts a big "out of compliance" because they didn't do the permits right. We TOLD them when they sent us the plans for approval it was missing the concrete slab in the yard. They said, "no, that's ok, that goes somewhere else, this is just the room plans". Fine, except then NONE of the crews who've shown up know about it? And apparently neither do the plans? They can't even pull permits correctly? Out $20k so far with nothing but a useless patio, a lot of dead grass from a stack of lumber that's sat for almost FOUR MONTHS, and no progress. They'll rip your stuff down REAL fast, but building NEW stuff is taking FOREVER. I remember when we first looked into them in Feb we saw they had 24 complaints in the last 12 months. Just 3 months later that number has doubled!?!? My guess is this company is getting ready to cut-and-run, close down, and reopen with another name. That's why we put a complaint in with the Dept of Business Regulations against the LICENSE and not just the company. They won't be reopening elsewhere under a new name.
